Information for O’Neal Library Board Applicants:
Board Membership
- Candidates must live in the City of Mountain Brook.
- Candidates may not serve on two City of Mountain Brook Boards or Commissions concurrently.
- The O’Neal Library Board consists of five members appointed by the Mountain Brook City Council.
- The O’Neal Library Board meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 8:30 am.
- Terms of service are four years.
- Each Member shall be appointed for not more than two consecutive terms.
- Members shall serve without compensation of any kind.
Desirable Qualifications
- Interest in the library and its services; knowledge through personal use of the library’s print and digital collections; Visits the library regularly
- Knowledge of the community; a general understanding of the social and economic conditions of the City
- Active with groups or organizations within the community
- Lifelong learner interested in learning new things
- Willingness to spend up to 5 hours per month in preparation for monthly board meetings, meeting attendance, representing the library at meetings and public functions, and advocacy at city events and meetings
- Willingness to complete Trustee Training as required by the Alabama Public Library Service
- Ability and willingness to effectively support the strategic plan of the library
- An open mind and respect for the opinions of others; ability to work well with others, including fellow board members, the library director and staff, other library volunteer groups, city government and the public
- Ability to think and plan creatively, to question objectively, and use sound judgement in establishing library policies and overseeing library finances
- Supervise the Library Director and support the director’s administrative decisions
