Virginia Smith has been on the City Council of Mountain Brook since 2000, and President of the City Council since 2006.  Her council duties include serving as liaison to the Parks and Recreation Board and Board of Landscape Design. 

Virginia was born and raised in Mountain Brook.  She attended HIghlands and Altamont, then received her A.B. in Classical Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College.  She earned her J.D. from Washington & Lee University School of Law where she was both a contributor and editor for the Law Review.  Following law school she practiced law with both Maynard Cooper & Gale. PC., where she met her husband David, and Johnson Barton Proctor and Powell.  Virginia retired from the practice of law after the birth of their second son.

Virginia and her husband David have three children.  She was an active parent at their schools and served as Parent Association President of Indian Springs School as well as on various other school committees.  She was on the Edward Lee Norton Board of Advisors at Birmingham-Southern College, a graduate of Leadership Birmingham, and previously served as Ball Co-Chair to the Birmingham Museum of Art, Board of Directors of the Birmingham Botanical Society and PreSchool Partners.  She is a sustainer of The Junior League of Birmingham.

In 2009 She was awarded the Distinguished Leadership Award - Elected Public Official from the Alabama Chapter of the American Planning Association.  

Virginia is a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal church, enjoys working in her yard, and being outdoors. She is an athlete, aspiring artist and mycologist.
