Dana Hazen began her career in 1986 as a Planner for the City of Newport Beach, California, joined the planning staff of Jefferson County, Alabama in 1999, and began work for the City of Mountain Brook in 2007, establishing the city’s first planning department.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Ecology, with a specialization in Environmental Health and Planning, from the University of California, Irvine in 1986; and her Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating with academic distinction in 2007.

Dana has been a member of the American Planning Association’s Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) since 2000; is a member of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), and a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration.

As the Director of PB&S, Dana manages the current and long range planning functions for the city and oversees inspection services.  She prepares and administers the Planning, Building and Sustainability Department budget, attends public hearings and community meetings on behalf of the city and ensures department compliance with city, county, state and federal agencies

Dana provides staff assistance to the City Manager, the City Council, the Planning Commission, and the Board of Zoning Adjustment; carries out comprehensive planning functions such as the administration and maintenance of the City's long range plan and the Village Master Plan; administers and updates the City's Zoning Ordinance, Zoning Map, Subdivision Regulations and Sign Ordinance; responds to general public inquiries regarding zoning and land development; processes land use applications such as rezoning, resurveys, variances; and reviews construction plans for compliance with zoning regulations.
